No disrespect, but when Kuseni Dlamini of Richard Bay Coal Terminal walked into the seminar room, someone should have warned us that we were on a serious collision path… or better still, sounded a war-cry. This eloquent speaker provoked us, challenged us, and quite frankly, I was taken aback by some of the unexamined views and positions I hold on various global issues.
We discussed globalisation and its impact on business. We also talked about value-driven corporate culture and the need for organisations to unlearn outdated ways of doing business and learn new competitive ways if they plan to thrive in the dynamic global business environment. We agreed that the changing global landscape presented opportunities for business… look at how the Chinese have fong-konged the world.
Anyway, what started out as a discussion on the challenges facing leaders in a rapidly changing business environment turned out to be a heated debate on ‘self interest’ at both the national and personal level.
Of course, no discussion on national self interest can be complete without discussing good ol’ U.S of A. Most of the class wondered in whose name and national interest the U.S had attacked Iraq. We (there I go exposing my biases) felt that the U.S was behaving like a school yard bully controlling the world with an iron fist (and a few bombs).
Two schools of thought emerged in the room. On the one hand, there was the Machiavellian camp who thought that for God and Country, there was no limit to what one could do in the name of national interest. Then there was the ‘other’ (my) group, who thought that if left untamed, self or national interest mutated itself into corruption, exploitation and domination of the weaker by the stronger.
Even though I still hold my position that self interest should not be realised at any price, the thought-provoking discussion forced me to re-examine some of the ideas and assumptions that I peddle around.

Hey,Mwangi
I think we should throw away this word (national/self interest). It's got negative connotations.Everytime someone utters this word i cannot help thinking about greed, ruthlessness and self-seeking conceitedness.Maybe is because it has dominated the American parlance so much.Sorry, here i go again placing everything on the good- old Yankees' doorstep. Is it fair?
A nation has to look after its own interest, that is why there is a nation, isn't there? At times, Dlamini sounded like 'might is right' which I found a bit over the top. I guess he wanted to be provocative. I do think however that people should pursue their aims in life, even at times selfishly. But it is all a matter of balance.
Dear Susan, indeed Dlamini's session was extremly enjoyable, especially for me.
You mention that the group was divided into two camps-one in favour of the USA and one against (regarding the issue of self-interest in politics).
However, don't you think that only me and Dlamini were the ones that defended America and Americans. At least, I felt that way.
But again, I like Americans and I do no see a problem with pursuing your own interest-whenever it is something that has to do with politics.
In fact, Thomas, each nation does that today. Perhaps America does it on a greater scale than others.
But let's not forget that Americans introduced free-market capitalism and democracy to the world-especially after the end of the Cold War.
They saved the world from socialist rule and Soviet domination. Isn't that a great deal to humankind?
Hi Sue,
I was of your view as I am against any exploitation of human kind. But I still keep in mind the fact that with the global requirement of competitiviness, thought like pro-poor and pro-social strategy are becoming inaccurate. Nowadays world thinks about the majority. If a group should be sacrificed for a goal, that will be done at least if a big number is better-off. There is no moral in today competitions.
Thanks
Hi Susan
I had the great priveledge to have one of my honours classes with Mr Dlamini, and what a passionate and dedicated lecturer he was. And funny enough he is also a friend of my dad, so I hold him in the highest regard.
I enjoyed focussing on China during our lectures. What an amazing example of what a country could do if it is driven by culture, passion, and a strong commitment to become a world "superpower". And what makes it even more interesting is that China does not care what the world thinks, it just carries on with its business on its own accord.
Another aspect is the fact that China pumps foreign direct investment into Africa. Yes, I know the main reason for this is to get their hands on Africa's natural resources, but in turn China helps build the decaying infrastructure in many African countries, unlike many countries getting their hands on the natural resources, but in turn gives nothing back, or helps fuel corruption. But let me not get into too much detail :)
I enjoyed your blog. Good luck for the future and keep us updated on all the happenings in your life.
Regards
celeste

The French gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne has a wonderful aroma, a rich taste; the saltiness increases with the incidence of veining. The overall flavor is piquant but not overly sharp. Bleu d'Auvergne started life as an imitation of Roquefort, using cow's milk in place of sheep's milk. Legend has it that a peasant, around 1845, decided to inject his cheese with a blue mold that he found growing on his left-over bread (the motto being, waste not, want not). And thus, the gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne was born. This French gourmet blue cheese comes from the region of Auvergne and the cheese is made from milk of Salers and Aubrac cows. The rind is very thin and so the cheese is usually wrapped in foil. The cheese is rich and creamy with a pale yellow color and scattered holes and well-defined greenish-blue veining. We cut and wrap this cheese in wedge of 8 ounces and 1 pound.

Once upon a time air travel was a great deal simpler than it is today. You called one of a few airlines that flew from your airport, the agent would tell you what flights were available for a given time, and you booked the one you wanted. Airports were always bustling places, especially during the holidays, but as long as you gave yourself adequate time, the process was usually the same. You would check your bags, go through the x-ray machine, get your boarding pass, and wait patiently at the appropriate gate. Once you got on the plane you ate the snack or meal that came with your flight and watched a movie.
In recent years travel by plane has become significantly more complicated. There are so many different configurations for flights and types of fares. Dire economic circumstances have caused airlines to raise rates and charge extra fees for everything from baggage to blankets. There are complex rules about what you can and cannot carry in your luggage. It can be very difficult to determine whether you are getting the best deal or the best services when you buy an airline ticket. The internet makes the navigation of airlines, airports, and flight itineraries easier, but, even so, be prepared to do some research if you want to find a flight at the best price.
Here is something up front that might save you time and money right off the bat. If you are traveling within the United States mainland, always look at Southwest Airlines first. Southwest is almost always the best deal you will find. However, Southwest itineraries do not appear on the major travel websites, so always go directly to the airline's website for information. Plug in your travel plans, and you will get a list of all the flights that are available. Southwest typically charges more reasonable prices than other airlines, and there are no hidden fees. The price you see is the price you get although tax and the government fee that is attached to all flights does apply. For lower prices than you can probably get anywhere else look at the "web only" fares, but keep in mind that these fares are not refundable.

Long time lurker, thought I would say hello! I really dont post much but thanks for the good times I have here. Love this place..
When I was hurt in that vehicle accident my life would be changed for good. Unfortunately that driver had no car insurance and I was going to be in pain for ever.
This was not time for me to start and guess what to do. I had to find a good attorney to help me get what I needed. After all, my family was counting on me.
How bad was it? I has bedridden for 4 months, I had to have constant care and my hospital bills went through the roof!
Gratefully, I found a good referral site to help me.
I will post more later this year to tell you more about what I have been going through.
